Are you tired of feeling self-conscious about your small breasts? Do you often find yourself wondering what causes this condition of breast hypoplasia or if there are any effective treatments available? We discuss the possible causes of small breasts and how this can affect you. We will also explore potential treatment options from simple measures to possible plastic or cosmetic surgery procedures to help enhance the size of the breasts.
We know at our offices in Cheshire & Manchester breast hypoplasia, also known as small breasts or micromastia may be due to a number of different factors or causes. The most important factor is often your genetics and small breasts will tend to run in the family. This hereditary history of small breasts is a major influence on potential for breast development and the most common reason for breast hypoplasia. There may be hormonal factors that can affect breast development. In some patients, use of the contraceptive pill can influence breast development often causing a reduction in size when they are stopped. Eating disorders can also have an impact on breast development and result in small breasts. Pregnancy and breast feeding can also result in changes to the breast size. Many women find that there is loss of volume or fullness after having a child or baby. There are some rare syndromes that may also result in micromastia or failure of breast growth.
The symptoms of breast hypoplasia may be psychological or physical. Psychological symptoms are often lack of confidence, insecurities about your body, and low self esteem. Many patients come to our clinic feeling that they are not womanly or feminine. Some patients may complain of feeling uncomfortable undressing with a partner or always wearing a bra to hide the breasts. Physical symptoms may include difficulty finding appropriate clothing or wearing push up bras regularly.
There are many products that are advertised promoting breast growth from creams to suction devices.
In reality, these sorts of treatments are usually not effective in giving you bigger breasts. There is no scientific evidence that any creams can significantly increase breast size. There are some less invasive options that may be described such as using fillers for breast enhancement. There was a filler called Macrolene that was marketed for this but this was withdrawn due to numerous problems.
I have seen a number of patients that have had fillers injected into the breasts which have resulted in lumpiness and this can be a very difficult problem to treat. We would usually recommend avoiding injecting the breasts with synthetic fillers. The only filler that be used to make breasts larger is fat. The technique of fat transfer can be useful although it is not predictable as some volume will be lost due to absorption. The main surgical option for breast enlargement is using breast implants.
Breast augmentation is commonly called a boob job. This is a procedure that uses a breast implant to give an increase in the size of the breasts. The operation is usually performed under a general anaesthetic. You will normally leave the hospital on the same day. The use of breast implants has been used for decades for increasing the breast size in women. It is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery performed in women worldwide.
If you’ve ever felt self-conscious about your small breast size or feel that having small breasts affects your confidence then you may wish to consider the possibility of a breast augmentation. This is a surgical procedure that can help enhance your breasts using silicone breast implants. This procedure is very commonly performed and one of the most common procedures I perform. After receiving treatment for breast hypoplasia Manchester & Cheshire patients have reported a significant improvement in their confidence following breast augmentation. Below are some of the reviews from patients following breast enlargement.
