With Reza Nassab in Cheshire & Manchester breast implant exchange is a procedure to change existing breast implants. This can be performed either increase or decrease the size of the breasts following previous breast augmentation. There are many reasons why patients may seek changing of their breast implants.
With breast implant exchanges Manchester & Cheshire patients most commonly decide to get them for the following reasons:
Desire for Size or Shape Modification
Over time, individuals may decide they want to change the size, shape, or profile of their breasts. Whether seeking a larger, smaller, or more proportionate appearance, breast implant exchange offers the opportunity to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome.
Implant Aging and Degradation
Like any medical device, breast implants have a lifespan and may degrade over time. As implants age, they may develop issues such as rippling, sagging, or changes in texture, which can affect the appearance and feel of the breasts. Exchange procedures allow individuals to replace old implants with newer ones, restoring a more youthful and natural appearance.
Correction of Complications
Some individuals may experience complications with their existing implants, such as capsular contracture (scar tissue formation around the implant), implant rupture, implant malposition, or implant displacement. Breast implant exchange can address these complications, improving both physical comfort and cosmetic appearance.
Changes in Lifestyle or Preferences
Lifestyle changes, such as weight fluctuations, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or shifts in fashion trends, may influence a person’s breast augmentation preferences. Breast implant exchange enables individuals to adapt their breast size and shape to better suit their current lifestyle and personal aesthetic goals.
Improved Technology and Materials
Advances in breast implant technology and materials offer individuals more options for achieving their desired look and feel. Some may choose to exchange their implants to upgrade to newer, more advanced implants that provide improved safety, durability, and aesthetic outcomes.
Addressing Dissatisfaction with Previous Surgery
In some cases, individuals may be dissatisfied with the results of a previous breast augmentation procedure. Whether due to asymmetry, unnatural appearance, or other concerns, breast implant exchange allows for correction and enhancement to achieve the desired outcome.
Health and Safety Concerns
Rarely, individuals may choose to exchange their breast implants due to concerns about the safety or integrity of their current implants. This may be prompted by issues such as implant recalls, emerging safety concerns, or personal health considerations.
Some patients may also require an uplift of the breast and this may require a mastopexy or breast lift procedure. Frequently, when reducing the size of implants an uplift may be required to tighten the skin around the smaller implants. Determining when to change breast implants can depend on various factors, including the type of implants, individual circumstances, and personal preferences. Situations where breast implant exchange may be recommended include implant rupture, capsular contracture, changes in breast appearance, implant malposition or displacement, desire for size or type change, implant age and degradation, and health and safety concerns.
Breast implants can be classified according to their shape, composition, or coating. The main types include round or anatomical (teardrop) shapes, with fillings typically being silicone or saline, and surfaces that may be smooth, textured, or coated with polyurethane.
Breast implant surgery is considered safe with numerous studies supporting the safety of silicone breast implants, showing no links with autoimmune disorders, connective tissue diseases, or cancers.
There is currently no evidence that breast implants cause an increased risk of breast cancer. However, there are very rare types of cancer, such as ALCL or SCC, that may be related to breast implants.
Potential complications, although uncommon, include bleeding and haematoma formation, infection, scarring, change in nipple sensation, asymmetry, implant extrusion, implant rupture, gel bleed, and capsular contracture.
It is recommended to wait for 6 weeks before flying long haul to ensure everything has settled. Short haul flights may be possible after 2 weeks, but a support bra should be worn for 6 weeks following surgery.
The need for an uplift after exchanging breast implants depends on the size of the implant, if there is ptosis or drooping of the breast tissue, and the amount of sagging and nipple position.
I use the highest quality Mentor breast implants that are owned by Johnson and Johnson. These are breast implants with a high safety track record that have been on the market for over two decades. They are one of the only brands with long term published clinical results.
