What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

A Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) uses your own fat — harvested by liposuction from the abdomen, flanks or thighs — to enhance the shape and volume of the buttocks. Unlike implants, fat transfer produces natural-looking results and simultaneously contours the donor areas. Mr Reza Nassab FRCS (Plast) is one of the UK’s leading BBL surgeons and co-authored the BAAPS national guidelines on safe BBL surgery. His safety-first approach uses ultrasound guidance and subcutaneous-only fat placement to minimise risk.

What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

In Cheshire & Manchester Brazilian Butt Lifts are a popular cosmetic surgery designed to enhance the size and shape of the buttocks. Unlike traditional butt augmentation methods, which may use implants, a BBL utilises a patient's own fat, harvested from other areas of the body, to achieve a more natural look and feel. This procedure not only augments the buttocks but also involves liposuction to remove excess fat from areas such as the abdomen, thighs, and flanks, resulting in an overall body contour improvement.

How is a Brazilian
Butt Lift Performed?

With a Brazilian Butt Lift Manchester & Cheshire patients will undergo several key steps:

  1. Anaesthesia: The procedure typically begins with the administration of anaesthesia. This is usually general anaesthesia which means you will be put to sleep. We will also inject local anaesthetic during the procedure to help with pain and recovery.
  2. Liposuction: We perform liposuction to remove fat from predetermined areas of the body. This involves making small incisions through which a thin tube, called a cannula, is inserted. The cannula loosens the fat, which is then suctioned out using a surgical vacuum. This can also be combined with Vaser. We usually use power assisted liposuction devices such as Microaire for this.
  3. Purification of Fat: The extracted fat is then purified to remove any excess fluids and non-fat tissues. This ensures that only healthy fat cells are used for the transfer. We use special filter devices such as Lipofilter or Pure Graft.
  4. Fat Injection: The purified fat is strategically injected into the buttocks at various depths to achieve a natural and aesthetically pleasing augmentation. We carefully sculpt the area to ensure symmetry and the desired shape is achieved as much as possible. We also use novel techniques such as Expansion Vibration Lipofilling (EVL).

Who is the Ideal Candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift?

The ideal candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift in Manchester & Cheshire is someone who:

  • Has Sufficient Fat Stores: Since the procedure uses the patient’s own fat, candidates must have adequate fat deposits in other areas of the body.
  • Is in Good Health: Candidates should be in good overall health, without conditions that could complicate surgery or recovery.
  • Has Realistic Expectations: It's important for candidates to have realistic expectations about the results and understand that a BBL is aimed at enhancing their natural contours.
  • Desires a Natural-Looking Result: Those looking for a more natural enhancement as opposed to the look that can be achieved with implants.

Benefits of a BBL

  • Natural Look and Feel: Because the fat used in the procedure comes from the patient’s own body, the results tend to look and feel more natural compared to implants.
  • Dual Benefit of Liposuction: Patients benefit from both buttocks augmentation and the contouring effects of liposuction in other areas of the body.
  • Customisable Results: The surgeon can carefully sculpt the buttocks to the patient’s desired shape and size.
  • Lower Risk of Rejection: Using the patient’s own fat reduces the risk of rejection or allergic reactions that can occur with implants.

Risks of a BBL

While a Brazilian Butt Lift can offer impressive results, it does come with certain risks:

  • Fat Embolism: One of the most serious risks is the possibility of fat embolism, where fat enters the bloodstream and travels to the lungs or brain, potentially causing serious complications.
  • Infection: As with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of infection.
  • Asymmetry: There is a chance of uneven results, where one buttock may appear larger or differently shaped than the other.
  • Fat Absorption: Some of the transferred fat may be reabsorbed by the body, which can reduce the volume of the buttocks over time.

How Can BBL Be Done Safely?

To ensure a safe Brazilian Butt Lift procedure, several precautions and guidelines should be followed:

  • Choose an Experienced Surgeon: There are only a small number of surgeons in the UK that offer BBL surgery. Mr Nassab was one of the authors of the BAAPS UK Guidance on Safe BBL surgery.
  • Adhere to Safety Protocols: The surgeon should follow strict safety protocols during fat extraction and injection to minimise risks. These protocols were featured in the BAAPS Guidelines for Superficial Gluteal Fat Grafting that was written by Mr Omar Tillo, Mr Reza Nassab and Mr Marc Pacifico. These guidelines were published in the Gold Journal or Aesthetic Surgery Journal.
  • Utilise Ultrasound Guidance: Using ultrasound technology during fat injection can help the surgeon precisely place the fat in the correct tissue planes, reducing the risk of complications such as fat embolism.

Latest Guidance from BAAPS on BBL Surgery

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) has provided updated guidelines to enhance the safety of BBL procedures. These were co-written by Mr Nassab. They include some suggestions to perform safe Brazilian Butt Lift, such as:

  • Limit Fat Injection: Recommendations suggest limiting the amount of fat injected to minimise complications.
  • Use of Ultrasound: The use of ultrasound technology during the procedure to ensure the fat is injected into the subcutaneous layer rather than deeper into the muscle, reducing the risk of fat embolism.
  • Patient Selection: Emphasis on careful patient selection and thorough preoperative assessments to identify any potential risk factors.

What is Superficial Gluteal Fat Transfer?

Superficial Gluteal Fat Transfer is a technique where fat is injected into the superficial layers of the buttocks, rather than deep into the muscle. Deep muscle injection was linked to the death occurring in patients undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift in Turkey and other countries. This approach aims to reduce the risk of fat embolism by avoiding deeper injections and focusing on the subcutaneous tissue.

Why Should the Surgeon Use Ultrasound During the Procedure?

Because we use ultrasound during a Brazilian Butt Lift Manchester & Cheshire patients are provided several more benefits:

  • Enhanced Precision: Ultrasound allows the surgeon to see exactly where the fat is being injected, ensuring it is placed in the correct layers.
  • Reduced Risk: By avoiding deeper injections into the muscle, the risk of fat embolism is significantly reduced.
  • Improved Outcomes: More precise fat placement can lead to better aesthetic results and more symmetrical outcomes.

Different Shapes of the Buttocks

Buttocks come in various shapes, influenced by factors such as genetics, muscle distribution, fat deposition, and overall body structure. Understanding these shapes can help individuals and surgeons set realistic goals for cosmetic procedures like the Brazilian Butt Lift. Here are the most commonly recognised buttock shapes:

Round (Bubble) Buttocks

Description: The round or bubble buttocks are characterized by fullness at both the top and bottom, creating a spherical appearance. This shape is often desired for its balanced and voluptuous look.

Considerations: Patients with this shape may seek to enhance overall volume or improve symmetry. Liposuction around the waist and flanks can further accentuate the roundness by creating a more defined contrast between the buttocks and the surrounding areas.

Heart-Shaped (A-Shape) Buttocks

Description: Heart-shaped buttocks, also known as A-shape, are fuller at the bottom and taper towards the top, resembling an inverted heart. This shape is often associated with a prominent, feminine curve.

Considerations: Enhancements for this shape often focus on adding volume to the upper buttocks to achieve a more balanced look. Liposuction around the lower back and sides can also help define the shape.

Square (H-Shape) Buttocks

Description: Square or H-shaped buttocks have a more angular appearance, with the width of the hips and buttocks being nearly equal. This shape may appear less curvaceous and more boxy.

Considerations: Patients with square buttocks may aim to create a more rounded appearance by adding volume to the outer and upper buttocks. Contouring the waist and lower back through liposuction can enhance the curvature.

V-Shaped Buttocks

Description: V-shaped buttocks taper from the hips to the buttocks, creating a narrower base. This shape is often seen in individuals with wider shoulders and narrower hips.

Considerations: Enhancing V-shaped buttocks typically involves adding volume to the lower and outer parts of the buttocks to achieve a more balanced and rounded look. Liposuction around the upper buttocks and lower back can help to redefine the shape.

Rounder Top (Inverted Heart) Buttocks

Description: This shape is characterized by more fullness at the top of the buttocks, giving an inverted heart appearance. It is somewhat similar to the heart-shaped buttocks but with a more pronounced upper curvature.

Considerations: Enhancements might focus on balancing the lower part of the buttocks with the upper part. Liposuction around the waist and abdomen can further enhance the contrast.

Customizing BBL Procedures Based on Buttock Shape

When considering a BBL in Manchester & Cheshire, understanding the patient's natural buttock shape helps in planning the procedure to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing and natural results. Here are a few ways the procedure can be tailored based on buttock shapes:

  • Round Buttocks: Emphasis on maintaining symmetry and overall volume.
  • Heart-Shaped Buttocks: Adding volume to the upper buttocks for a more balanced look.
  • Square Buttocks: Focus on creating a rounder appearance by enhancing the outer and upper regions.
  • V-Shaped Buttocks: Increasing volume at the lower and outer areas to balance the shape.
  • Rounder Top Buttocks: Balancing the lower part to match the fullness of the upper buttocks.

Each shape has its unique considerations, and a thorough consultation with a qualified surgeon can help determine the best approach to achieve the desired results while maintaining a natural look.

Brazilian Butt Lift Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the recovery period for a BBL?

Recovery typically takes about 2–4 weeks. Patients are commonly advised to avoid sitting directly on their buttocks for at least two weeks — using a BBL pillow when necessary — to allow the transferred fat to integrate properly and reduce pressure-related fat loss.

When will I see the final results of my BBL?

Initial results are visible immediately after surgery. Final results become more apparent after swelling subsides, usually around 3–6 months post-operation. Some fat reabsorption is expected — the fat cells that establish a blood supply become a permanent part of the buttocks.

Can a BBL be combined with other procedures?

Yes. A Brazilian Butt Lift can be combined with procedures such as a tummy tuck or breast augmentation as part of a broader body contouring plan. The liposuction component already contours the donor areas simultaneously.

Is the fat transfer permanent?

Some transferred fat may be reabsorbed by the body in the weeks following surgery. However, the fat cells that establish a blood supply become a long-term part of the buttocks. Maintaining a stable weight helps preserve your results over time.

Are there non-surgical alternatives to a BBL?

Non-surgical options such as Lanluma or Hyacorp injections can provide some buttock enhancement, but they do not offer the same volume, longevity, or dual body-contouring benefit as a surgical fat transfer BBL. Suitability can be discussed at consultation.

How much does a BBL cost?

BBL prices start from £12,500 with Mr Nassab. The final cost depends on the complexity of the procedure, the number of areas liposuctioned, and whether VASER is used. A confirmed, personalised quote is provided after consultation.
