Risks of BBL Surgery in Turkey

Published by Reza Nassab

Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery is a popular cosmetic procedure globally, including in Turkey. While Turkey is known for offering cost-effective medical and cosmetic procedures, it’s crucial for patients to understand the risks associated with undergoing BBL surgery in any location, including Turkey. The primary risks are generally similar worldwide, but some additional considerations might arise due to differences in healthcare systems, standards, and regulatory oversight.

General Risks of BBL Surgery

1. Fat Embolism

   – One of the most serious risks associated with BBL surgery is fat embolism, where fat particles enter the bloodstream and can travel to the lungs, heart, or brain, potentially causing life-threatening complications.

   – Prevention: Ensuring the surgeon injects fat into the subcutaneous layer rather than the muscle can reduce this risk. Using techniques like ultrasound guidance can further mitigate this risk. These devices may not be present in countries like Turkey offering cheaper surgery.

2. Infection

   – Any surgical procedure carries a risk of infection. This risk can be heightened if sterility protocols are not strictly followed.  There have been a number of studies that have shown unusual organisms in patients that have had surgery in Turkey and other countries.

   – Prevention: Proper surgical techniques, sterilization of equipment, and postoperative care, including antibiotics, are essential for reducing infection risk.

3. Asymmetry

   – There is a possibility of achieving uneven results, where one buttock may be larger or shaped differently than the other.

   – Prevention: Choosing a skilled and experienced surgeon can minimize this risk. Follow-up procedures might be necessary to correct any asymmetry.

4. Fat Absorption

   – A portion of the transferred fat may be reabsorbed by the body, leading to a reduction in volume over time. This is due to the technique used by the surgeons.

   – Prevention: Surgeons often inject slightly more fat than needed to account for this absorption. Multiple sessions might be required to achieve desired results.

5. Scarring

   – Scars can form at liposuction and injection sites.

   – Prevention: Proper surgical techniques and postoperative care can minimize scarring.

6. Prolonged Swelling and Bruising

   – Swelling and bruising are common after BBL surgery and can last several weeks.

   – Prevention: Following postoperative care instructions, including wearing compression garments, can help reduce swelling and bruising.

Additional Considerations for BBL Surgery in Turkey

1. Surgeon Qualification and Experience

The qualification and experience of surgeons can vary significantly. Not all surgeons may have the same level of expertise or training. Research and select a board-certified plastic surgeon with substantial experience in BBL procedures. Verify their credentials and look for patient reviews and before-and-after photos.

2. Facility Standards

The standards of medical facilities in Turkey might differ from those in the UK or other Western countries.  In the UK, we have CQC registered facilities but in Turkey there may less strict regulation of facilities. Ensure the procedure is performed in a reputable clinic or hospital that meets international healthcare standards. Accreditation by international bodies like the Joint Commission International (JCI) can be a good indicator of quality.

3. Postoperative Care

Access to adequate postoperative care can be a concern, especially for international patients who may need to travel back home shortly after surgery.  The main issue is if there is a problem postop then contact and visits back to your surgeon in can be difficult and costly. Arrange for comprehensive postoperative care before traveling. Ensure you have a clear understanding of the follow-up procedures and emergency contact information.

4. Language Barrier

Communication issues can arise if there is a language barrier between the patient and the healthcare providers. We have seen a number of patients that have only met their surgeon on the day and have not had their desired needs addressed due to language barriers. Choose a clinic with staff fluent in your language or ensure you have a reliable translator available throughout your treatment and recovery.

5. Travel-Related Risks

Long flights after surgery can increase the risk of complications such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).Follow medical advice regarding travel after surgery. Plan to stay in Turkey for an adequate period post-surgery to ensure you are stable and can manage any immediate postoperative complications.

Conclusion

While BBL surgery in Turkey can be an appealing option due to cost savings, it is essential to be aware of the potential risks and take steps to mitigate them. Ensuring you choose a highly qualified and experienced surgeon, verifying the standards of the medical facility, arranging comprehensive postoperative care, and addressing any language barriers are critical steps to ensure a safe and successful outcome. As with any medical procedure, thorough research and careful planning are key to achieving the best results.
